The murder trial of the teenager accused of gunning down a man in the Yau Bros. Chinese carryout is scheduled to begin next week.
Markell Jones’ trial on charges of first-degree murder, carrying or wearing a handgun on his person and using a firearm in the commission of a felony or violent crime is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., Monday, in the east courthouse in Baltimore City Circuit Court, 111 N. Calvert St.
Jones, 18, is accused of shooting and killing 52-year-old Freddie Jones Jr., no relation, in the carryout, located at 2901 Greenmount Ave., the night of Oct. 31, 2011.
At the time police said the victim was shot while resisting the robbery.
Following the crime, police canvassed the Waverly, Better Waverly and Harwood neighborhoods, while Freddie Jones Jr.’s family made an emotional plea to residents to help find his killers.
"Please, please come forward. You have no idea the person that you took away. This man was wonderful. The best father anyone could ever have," Devita Jones, Freddie Jones Jr.’s daughter, said at the time.
Police later released a surveillance video that showed three people involved in the robbery.
Less than a week later, Markell Jones, who was 17 years old at the time, turned himself in with the help of family and later confessed to the crime, according to Baltimore police.
But the other two people on the surveillance footage were never arrested or charged.
