Facing the Challenge
Craig Babst strapped on his biking cleats and hit the road from Baltimore to Florida, all to help young cancer survivors.
For eight days, Babst biked up 100 miles a day as part of a team that made stops down the east coast promoting cancer awareness and raising funds for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults -- and finished on April 13.
"The eight days of riding was some of the hardest, I’ve ever faced," Babst says. "We had high winds, long distances and difficulties navigating through some of the back roads. This seemed to resemble a cancer diagnosis in many ways, and I’m not being cliché."
Finding the Inspiration
Babst's wife, Amy, was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2008, and fought the cancer into remission, all while giving birth to two little girls.
And in some ways, the ride helped participants "heal the wounds that cancer inflicted upon our hearts," Babst said.
Reaching the Goal
Babst said the most important thing, though, was how many lives were touched along the way.
"Through our efforts we have raised over $100,000 towards the fight!" Babst says. "... I have undoubtedly formed bounds with people that will continue to grow, all thanks to Brian Satola and the team from the Ulman Cancer Fund. An amazing trip!"
