Orb, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, will start his run for a Preakness Stakes victory from the number one postposition.
The number one position means the horse will be the closest to the inside rail when the race begins, and the Preakness hasn’t had a winner from that position since Tabasco Cat in 1994. But Orb was still the odds on favorite to win the marquee race at Old Hill Top on Saturday.
"I’m not sure that I would have picked the ‘1’ out of there. If it had come out the ‘1’ in the Derby, you’d almost have felt like you needed to go home, but I don’t feel that way here," Shug McGauhney, Orb’s trainer, said in a news release.
