ABC News clip of second presidential debate.

Both President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney were seen as forceful in their second presidential debate Tuesday night — an in-your-face showdown in a town hall format at Hofstra University in New York.

Often interrupting one another and the moderator, the two candidates sparred over issues including energy, immigrant and women's rights, and foreign policy.

At one point, Romney told Obama, "You'll get your chance in a moment. I'm still speaking."

Moderator Candy Crowley of CNN told Romney in one exchange to "sit down" and let Obama finish his statement.

CBS News anchor Scott Pelley called it the "most rancorous presidential debate ever."

The debate came on a day when polls showed opinions of the two candidates neck and neck among the American public.

Romney was widely seen as besting Obama in their first face-off at the University of Denver, putting the onus on Obama to regain momentum in Round 2.

The town hall setting presented special challenges and opportunities since the candidates interacted directly with the public in a less formalized setting.

The ability to connect on a human level had been seen as an important element of such a debate but this face-off was anything but friendly.

Previous presidential election town halls have had memorable moments. There was the time in 2000 that Al Gore stood so close to George W. Bush it looked like Gore was attempting to use physical intimidation, giving Bush a chance to crack a joke at Gore's expense.

The last time Obama was in this situation, John McCain clumsily called him "That one" in discussing a Senate vote in which McCain said Obama voted for legislative pork.
