Federal charges have been filed against Baltimore police officer Ashley Roane of Pikesville, accused of providing armed protection for heroin dealers and advance notice of search warrants. Her roommate also was charged.

Roane and Erica Hughes, both 25, violated public trust, among other charges, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"Roane has been charged with helping a heroin dealer by providing armed, uniformed security for drug transactions; offering advance notice of search warrants and using police databases to check for informants," the release states.

She wore her uniform and was in her patrol car during the violations and she also helped a drug dealer "find a safe place to sell heroin in Baltimore," according to the document.

In one instance, April 30, she was paid for her protection in a narcotics transaction, according to the release.

Roane and Hughes are also charged with aggravated identity theft, the release states.

The pair allegedly got victims' names from a police database,"to obtain fraudulent tax refunds," it states.

Roane faces up to life in prison, as well as other possible sentences, the release states. Hughes faces up to two years in prison on charges of aggravated identity theft.

Their initial appearance is set for Monday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore.
