(UPDATED) 5:58 p.m.—A Notre Dame of Maryland student has reported being sexually assaulted at knifepoint on its campus, according to an email alert sent to students at neighboring Loyola University Maryland.

The woman reported being sexually assaulted on a pathway near Notre Dame’s Knott Science Center at 3 a.m., on Monday on the east side of campus after leaving the Loyola/Notre Dame Library, according to the email.

The woman has been released from an area hospital. The Baltimore Police Department is investigating the incident with support from the Loyola and Notre Dame departments.

Patrols by the schools' police will be increased, more closed circuit cameras will be focused in the area and students are being encouraged to travel in groups.

Nancy Carr, a spokeswoman for Notre Dame, said the initial reports left people on campus feeling a little unsettled, but that walking around today, and seeing the extra security measures has helped people feel more safe.

"The first thing that everyone says 'is she OK? Can I help her?'"  Carr said.

She said that there hasn't been an attack like this on campus in recent memory and that they'll work to find the attacker.

"We're deeply concerned about this and we're working with Baltimore City police to solve this crime and to make sure out campus remains a safe and secure place," Carr said.
