Three right lanes on the northbound outer loop of the Capital Beltway at Kenilworth Avenue (Rt. 201) will close Friday night, according to the State Highway Administration. As a result of the triple-lane closure, drivers are encouraged to take detour routes, according to Charlie Gischlar, SHA spokesman.
SHA is removing a demolition shield it put up as part of ongoing bridge work in Greenbelt.
The work will begin at 9 p.m. on Friday, weather permitting. Lanes will reopen to traffic by 8 a.m. Saturday, SHA reports. The highway administration plans to close one right lane at 9 p.m., two at 10 p.m., and three at midnight.
Gischlar recommends that drivers plan ahead and leave themselves plenty of extra time.
Cars can take the Baltimore-Washington Parkway as a detour, Gischlar said, adding that trucks cannot use the parkway.
The highway administration tells motorists to stay alert and to look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes, and highway workers. It also asks drivers to slow down and not follow other vehicles too closely through the work zone.
