File Phoyo: Gilman pitcher Charles Cross pitched no-hit and near perfect baseball over 5 2/3s innings at Camden Yards on Sunday to lead the Greyhounds to a 2-0 win over Mt. St. Joe and bring the President’s Cup to the Roland Park campus.

The President’s Cup brings the ping of hardball on aluminum bat back to Baltimore this weekend.

Saturday marks the start of the third annual President’s Cup baseball tournament founded by Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. "Jack" Young.

"In each of the previous two years, we’ve seen so many incredible things," Young said in a news release. "I’m not just talking about come-from-behind wins, diving catches, and clutch base-hits. I’m talking about students from different backgrounds, different neighborhoods, and different mindsets sharing in the same passions: fun, learning, competition, and baseball."

The tournament features nine public high schools and seven private schools from Baltimore City:

Private Schools

Public

  • Baltimore City College (City)
  • Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (Poly)
  • Digital Harbor High School
  • Maryland Academy for Technology and Health Sciences (M.A.T.H.S.)
  • Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School (Mervo)
  • Patterson High School

The is year the tournament will also include four friendly softball games between Digital Harbor High School, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and Institute of Notre Dame on April 6 at Swann Park.

The boys games start this weekend and are scheduled to be played at Mount Saint Joseph High School and the former Cardinal Gibbons field. Games will be held troughout the city during the next few weeks, and the semifinals will be played on April 6 at Johns Hopkins University (see bracket attached to this article for all games and times).

The championship games will be played on April 13 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Gilman School and Mount Saint Joseph's have won the previous two championships.
