Rocket to Venus No. 70: The newspaper mentions the fried PB&J sandwich and drink specials

Those opposing new bars in city neighborhoods should think twice.

According to an article by Matthew Yglesias on the website Slate, city bars are growth engines for urban neighborhoods, and that the concerns of immediate neighbors shouldn’t outweigh the benefits to the wider community.

"Cities need to recognize that bars and restaurants are not the ugly stepchildren of the modern urban economy: They are its greatest strength. They spur small-business growth and creation citywide. When cities consider whether to allow them, they should think about the overall benefits to the region, not the particular complaints of near neighbors," Yglesias argues.

North Baltimore communities are no stranger to the battle between commuity groups and restaurants seeking liquor licenses.

Uproars about liquor licenses at establishments, such as Meet 27 and Miss Shirley’s, have been subjects of the debates about liquor licenses and surrounding communities.

What do you think about bars being the driving force behind thriving economies in urban neighborhoods? Tell us in the comments.
